The above images are composed of original manuscript art created from the pages on which these writings were first written. The two pieces form a Diptych entitled, “The Towers of Columbia”

Twin Towers Manuscript Art

I am telling a story with this art piece, made of the original manuscripts on which the collection, district.Columbia was written. First off, the emphasis of stream-of-consciousness, spontaneous improvisation in writing as my primary writing practice, is illustrated here with the use of blotter action paint. This style of action paint, where the brush never touches the paper is meaningful, because it further gives importance to the truth of the creator, who is the perceiver and conceiver at once, in relation to the subject.

The destruction of the Twin Towers, was a defining moment in my life as an American youth, however, I only perceived it indirectly, outside of any direct mode of physical inception. The media, through which I experienced the raging disaster, is here given precedence over the content of the subject matter, hence the liberal use of spontaneous action blotter paint using ink. The use of ink is especially significant in that it gives form, in this action painting, to the blood and tears of the victims who were affected by the destruction of the Twin Towers. This includes especially the peoples of the Middle East, and particularly Iraq, whose society was devastated by a flood of violence and misinformation. The blurred writing overlain with blotter ink enunciates the misdirection of media and information with regard to the victims of the aftermath of this tragic debacle in world history. The deep blue sky above is an unnatural blue for the sky, representing an artificial environment with a full solar eclipse, further symbolizing the concealment of knowledge. The dark red underneath the towers stands for the blood of victims seeping underground, out of sight, where the true colors of their suffering continue to pour. The center space is left empty to signify the great abyss or gap which continues at the center of our existence in the West, and indeed all the world, as a result of the catastrophe which ensued in the wake of this infamous event.

Freedom Tower Manuscript Art

In the second manuscript art piece, the ink, once representing the fresh sweat and blood, splattered onto the finely penciled writing, has seeped through the paper. This signifies the fact that even if there is a new tower in the place of the old, the events which have come to pass in the wake of the Twin Towers devastation will appear in the construction of the new tower. Above, the great mystery, a UFO, blinks in a polluted sky, foretelling the haze of conspiracy which will perpetuate misinformation and a misdirection of military technology into the easily distracted, dramatic mind of the American public.

The unpainted manuscript pages beside the tower represent the clarity of judgment foretold and seen by the construction of the tower; that it is supported, in many ways, by the blood of those who have passed while the Death of American Freedom has unfolded after a decade of war, lies, and invasions both personal and public at home and abroad.

Preamble to district.Columbia

Preamble to district.Columbia

Inspired by the pre-colonial and pre-revolutionist metaphor for America, “Columbia,” a Goddess of Freedom, is an archetypal myth, once proudly personifying poetic optimism through feminine form. Through these writings, I personify the process of mythmaking as a dedication to compassionate awe and voiced protest in the historic confrontation with self and nation. The name Columbia was immortalized immediately before the Revolutionary War in 1775 by Phillis Wheatley, the first African American woman to publish her writing, in her poem, “His Excellency, General Washington.”

Written primarily based on a visit to Washington D.C., this collection is a vocal reclamation. These chronicles present a visitor returning to his home country, where visitation is defined by traversing an international land border. I represent my struggle to reclaim and recognize my unique voice. In these pages, I confront the realization that I am, in certain respects, an inheritor of the American way of life. Regardless, the inheritance is fraught with the psychological complexities of exile.

In this reclamation, I throw off vestigial principles of experience. I attempt to revision a new way of being through the living temperance of the written word, and specifically, my own practice of stream-of-consciousness writing. Such revision includes confronting a natural process of self-awareness, whereby self-expression revolutionizes into an identity with nature as a self-perpetuating source of renewal and life.

Spontaneous word creation, or improvisational writing, is a natural activity of the human mind. There is a power within that endless fount, that when regularly tapped as a spiritual practice, unleashes one’s surroundings with an ever-renewing energy. Such a practice motivates one personally, to interact with one’s immediate environment in dynamic ways. The reason for this effect is because in this practice, which actualizes into a way of being, the present moment becomes central. When the present is cherished with just significance, the mundane begins to breathe with new life.

The practice of improvised writing, in this sense, outlines a processional transformation in throwing off sterile notions of self and environment. district.Columbia begins by defining autonomous interactions between self and environment (as to parallel notions of the “New World” for pre-colonial Europeans and pre-revolutionist Americans) and ends with a declarative pronouncement; to create an openness to uninhibited spontaneity in personal creativity and a diverse awareness in social activity in our public spaces (as to parallel the current fomentation of creative social activity blurring the lines of public and personal art).

Art of the Worldly Races

Morose, pangs stir my subtle breath, walking up the nerves,
To break down with laughter and see ocean’s rise
From the abysmal core of first being,

The naked home of belief,
Cradling Lover’s net
As a down-pressed skeleton, chained with ire

In the now of her furtive beauty
Ranging amid backyard animal ghosts and the spidery cockroach
Filming suburban bathroom floors,

Knocking knees against the forested trunks’ sway,
And the neglected pyre steams into the eager morning
As breakfast is sold from Sunday’s river

To the imagined mirage, upheld with microscopic death
In the insect fire, breeding our collective imagination
Without guess in the end result of our programmed lives

Coldly moving from place to place
Like numbers spit into the viral joke of God
Seeing white rice burn to blackish brown on the needy plate of the human universe

Believed so beautifully
In the back of a working man’s mind,
Stepping to the bold indecision of a wakeful conspiring

To stretch into the mundane order and belie chaos
With lingual rush and tug
From monetary order to homeless pride

Of the official & diplomatic
Political collectivism, yearning to be right and make a difference
Through an uncaring sadness,

Across pyramids, tunneled to the foot of known reason
Yet, to be detached from an able body
Now roasting at the offering spit and waiting for mass death

To plummet from our towers, piercing heaven with a sufferer’s torment
Across worlds, times and into the imagined memory of the once-respected
Human insanity behind the art of the worldly races

Bare Wonderment

It’s all a blazed gold,
A tirade of the mouth, loosed in a volley of sun’s own gorgeous rays,
Smoothed over time
In an instantaneous recognition at Earth’s bare wonderment,
The stir of our breath
In the wind and pulse of sweat from the face
At true love’s rhyme
Under clouds, glowing with the luster of sky and an atmospheric rain
Bellowing in the blown heat
A thunderous moisture in the kiss from a Columbian Goddess,
An aged summer
That brings with it the fruits of the middle passage
Where the door to social fruition wanes
And the spiritual partakes in a lonely direction from home to a new name,
The new cry with mouth, and eyes darkening
With a scolding pass into the burn of Earth’s delicate orbital flux,
Deeply woven into the mind and heart
That roams our galaxy in living pleasure,
To state with reclaimed ambition, a new prophecy
In the mud of our volatile rearing
A cooling shade and the nerves of her presence, unmoving at Love’s name,
Sharing the lust of the universe in a laugh
With the buzz of insect systems cursing and unnerving the elegant sky
With smoke from the throat of the war machine herself,
Lady Pan in the cradle of civilization softly whispering to the American man
About a way into the wide crevasse of Western dirt,
As a Pharaonic law, broken across the tablet of an unborn religion
Bought for oil,
Calling gross environmental sound to nothing

Post-War Television Rites at the Dam of Time

A great poverty aligns to the roof of the all-consuming jaw,
That sweeps with the tornado dawn over the rushing plains,

Coercing,
Fixated over the painless youth, losing her virgin touch
            Under the split, cracked wood,
The handled gorge of hard-won paperless memory
            Infused in the caffeinated tongue,
            distilled with alcoholic energy

As the train-sped tow escalates over the random shore
of the underestimated Wilderness
growing to rebirth in the fearless mind of nature,

As American lore, talking through the human trees
In a grave, over-worked rush to the gambled fortune
                   hidden in the proud dream
To unite and be loyal to nothing,
And yet return from the hollow
blank rough of our creative winter

In the August of northern childhood freedoms
A thankless gasp at the uprising family
Who from death launched a life into the original space
            On post-war television rites,

And somehow the unlearned drowning gave credence
to a South, demoralized
            By a black death

Recovered from medieval anguish
That bled into the putrefied air
Filling our shameless lungs with the minted coin

On Roman nomads,
            Marauding in a future
with infinite magic in theatrical mystery,

An America reclaimed by rural night,
            Stolen in the belligerent fire,
            haunting our Germanic eyes

Over a mound of dirt,
            Who burn from genocide
Carrying the mud-thick blood of our émigré
                   ancestral order
Into a museum of bone-scented dirt,
With pores tingling at the frozen blood
                   encountered in mass grave disbelief

To remember where our blood overflowed
            Beyond the dam of time

To Play the Chord of Humanity beyond Taoist Shamanic Heights

A gorged beaming lore cavorts awful in the love for insanity
Against the bridge of our first original sin,
To glance carelessly at the shape of her breast
And the slight motion in her delicate stride, approaching,
To wonder about her, lain down and full with love-worn eyes,
To prepare mama’s grand blessing in the fantastic body,
To play and sing coldly into the guided morning,

A space for listening, to cleanse the air with sacred voice,
An incensed feeling,
Touching on lost beauty within and under the strongly pressed clothing
Worn like skin that drops sadly over her neck of virulent sorrow
As a shapeless feature in the energy of her following,

The immediate environment, playing along,
Harmonizing and sung beyond shamanic Taoist heights
With a most unknowing imprint,
To play the chord of humanity
And shower leaf & brush with the dirt of the river’s own word

Passing through a foreign box
Crafted with a tongue for sensuous musical fruition,
To meld in the sorrow and aftermath of prehistoric eyes
Dreaming around the enshrined doorway
Through our billions in pain,

The whistling tragedy,
A bombed out racialized distress in the humiliated city
Now boasting of a stress that saves and hordes banked heads from all countries
As their masks fall away to reveal different invocations to the Graecian-asp
Falling from the glory of antiquity into the English lap
On Massachusetts Ave.
Cowering behind mathematical lords

An Unknown Pleasure of Respect

“I saw the trunk,”
Her Hindu elephant from outside
Walks coolly from music’s grand Guest

At the public house,
In the window,
A final flicker before traversing the footboard
loosened with railroad age
Over the national telephone of spiritual callings
            Abused by electrified tradition
Stunned in the tingled alcoholic flame
In isolated, deserted and abandoned bodies
Whose spirits bore a frail passage,
engraved in the air of soundless rhyme,

A knowing
Ever thoughtless to the strength in pure being,
To grasp coldly into the summer’s beaten plea
            To sustain our musical sharing
            In human heaven’s piercing
                        Through the empty eye holes
Peering with my mirrored face of light
                                    Radiating, through absolute darkness
                                    as a visible cry
                                                To haunt our sacred sanctuary,

“That inebriated muse!”
Drinking the words of men into her silent womb,
To fixate her fingers into the cross
Formed over a chest glorified with Catholic warnings
To relieve one’s self of the world
and ask divinity to replace human desire

To become one collective struggling
As a unified presence,
Whose heart remained fixedly sanctified
Before the death of the Mother and the Father’s bared ghost
                        Pictured as a beacon
                        Blended into our animalistic foresight

To create with family an unknown pleasure of respect,
And see each other without warning in Love’s tragic beauty
Showing amid the broad-ended tune

Assailing the spectral peace hidden
among the leaves of a felled New England tree
Used as fodder for conversation among the fermented denial, and bled
Kissing behind our parent’s backs,

A yearning to prepare heedless ritual and articulate love to friends
Mixing in a vile cavernous frequency
Playing out the stress

In lives of normalcy
Proud to detest the generations of death
Covering their stolen blues

Names, written in bold
On the sleeve and backyard Sunday drive
Through countryside’s aimless war with classicist poverty

Drying up the world’s Southern well,
Holding land for buck skin’s latching and praying to Ares,
For a sprite to rule the benzene sky
            In tears of renounced pain
            Scaling the heights of mind
                                    Ingrained with ore

Phantom Pages of a Medieval Columbian Map

What masked pleasure fed this blockaded mouth?

“The nation’s economical bosom bleeds with childless milk for the ruffian few who glare amuck into the wild spring of the beatific northeastern kingdom,”

Our main will spills over these cursed tongues and thumb-drop eyes
Keeling over an old mountainous ridge
Numbing the birth pain contraction
Towards a conscious blurring, along the highest sky

Our blinds thunder down a star-crossed joke
Scared and cold in the midnight binge
Inside grandma’s New Bedford purse
Wailing in historic tomes about the whale’s danger & blessing
To bruise the English pace in an overtaking sea
With the magic and force of our forested craftsmen
Dreaming up skyline distances
Across the phantom pages of a medieval Columbian map,
Before telescopic forays into sail-born winds
Taking criminal junebug druggists
With Maya princesses and proud bejeweled Indian mythologies
Playing in the apathetic theater of the misbelieved free

Our aristocratic exoticism
Bearing down on mountainous floods
To drown the ghastly past and its African boats
Full with the god-forsaken ash of a new America
Burning up with the Phoenix of old Mexico
Atop the nerve of a blues guitar
Ringing along to the melancholic voice of our original body on Earth
Torn like Christ in the Mosaic whispers of an earthen body transformed

Our human plague and its genocidal awareness
In the 21st century of medicated madness
When poverty turned to poetry in the music of her glory

A Gorgeous Nudity

A gorgeous nudity, blank skin, emptiness on front exposure,

The unwritten page, a calming exercise, a psychic intuitive drive measured by release

In the catalogue of words strung into structured grooves
            In our common sonic language,
Yet to scalp the music in speech and create only the pale imprint and seed,
The livid desiring on the fornicated awe,
            Late, buzzing
            Filtered by hurricane winds
Mindlessly astir on into the human binge on space, land and the foam
            Buoyant over a sand-specked seascape
            Blighted with toughened eyes
            Grappling with alcoholic smoke-filled lives
Greedily turning the wheel of world war order into the small town cement

As we enjoy the insane destruction,
The chaotic living wilderness
Dreaming up deadly bared weak sleep into our holy lawless cast,
With land forsaken by mistreated burdens
And the murderous pride in a grieving home

Calm before the Storm

“What grievous horror betook these dumb streets?”

Touched with the unkindness of a meek following
From the near elderly, an old town deemed to inquietude
By the Queen’s long forsaken majesty,

“What prized blaring rose from the swollen cheeks of our daughter sea in the Columbian tide of the 21st century?”

Giving us play and reason to smirk while gazing at the mean rush and power
Taking off the English hat of a long gone America
Seeing no one in the mist fired laugh from this war

Breathing ocean
Suffocated by the calm before the storm
Indecision,

Forming throughout generations anxious about personified cash
Ruining their gold reputation as townies
Clucking behind the chicken wire of suburban fate

Down-pressing its unforgiving mold into a wild disorder and tragic hubbub
Coldly beaten into an ass of a young nation
Gripping for death at the edge of the western, manifest

As nature’s law thrives in disbelief

Playful Mortality

Playful mortality, and the scream of death
Under stadium lights,
3rd block West Clinton Street New Bedford

And mortality reigns with his eminent consort Time
Ever-gazing into the strict law of entrance into the beyond,
Beyond reclining chairs and horizontal graves

Broken under a gargled nose
Wheezing with the ancient slumber inside
The religious spirit aflame

Beneath a delicate skin of man
Braving the deforested aftermath of Assimilation
In the name of survivalist migration

After years of subconscious insubordination,
The doorway now flattened with the invincible family bond
Carrying our name and grown humor

Throughout the great Western crevasse of personal failure and youth’s tempting
Flight beyond apathetic death over telephone wires,
Peering gaily into the psychedelic mist of seashore boyhood American wisdom

To kneel at the ancestral cemetery
Bicycling towards entropic nirvanas
In bedrooms of Sanskrit and poetry,

“I will the disbelieving South!”

Down endless staircases
Unclenched at the banister of piano homesick news from video tears
Fleeting, in the dark unlit drive home, past memory and name

To the creative watchfulness in the starry abode of love
With my married fortune,
To display with emotional care the meaning behind relationship,

That ship that sailed into the thinning fog
Without lighthouse and with creaking mast
To the window’s song,

An inexorable life
Breathed on the backbone of Atlantic night
Before red sun morning overtakes

The superstitious ear of traditional music
In the final wake with an elder’s death
Gone to the incredible motion

Evading all sense
Yet still true
Death rings

Untrained Timeless Tuning

One proud, unseemly yet everlasting hoary wind
Escaping into the breathless fold of a storm-brought love
Escalating above the tumult of grounded trees
Lowered to rest in the silent play of her touch
With Mother Nature in lust at the American shoulder-sculpted God,

President of inveterate honor
Failing to maintain true gaze
Into the outpouring blind Persian mystic call
To fray our sterling enveloped studio message,

Apart from the leaking gauze
A city, wounded with loosening fear,

A deadly oath,

Rushing towards early traffic in the Brazilian grist,

A panicking pleasure on Wednesday
Mid-week business urge to blaspheme the classical
Station of the near-retired family prize,

Where loss disturbs the graying open
In a lawn-tempered drive through perfect memory
In the ingenious art
Instilled as ice on the brain
In a factory filled with fish-worn Guatemalan eyes
Beating on the beached flesh of an antiquarian whale
Bone-dry with anxious grace
Peaceful with a warming hatred
Bringing in close seeds, fostered yet unprepared for the raised urban soil
Feeding off the solar imprint of ancestral law

In northern skies, thinning in an atmospheric sense
Towards dismayed reason
Over all human failings, since recorded time,
Since the fine rumblings of surplus rent astir religious imaginings
In caves of word-horded greed,

Angelic money in the form of ideas,

Bled on the knife-edge cloak-whispering cold of Calgary’s busted future
To sweep the blue rug of worldly instrumentation
Catching on the tongue of the popular drug
Inside song and the vocal push to color and make lush
The southerly child and the unredeemed passion
Inside the traumatized infancy
Resonating to heart’s untrained timeless tuning

A Songster’s Realisy

“Where in whose pleasing leisure does our stock grow and go bolder in fields of blank duress from childless talent, filling space and accentuating silent harmony in the ever-widening round?”

To believe in light, and the possibility to endure the ground’s own failing trials
With Her round nature, orbiting in the mess of experience
Without prior knowledge, except when I believe in Her as my own

Forsaking the street’s anonymous tumble and yet cleaning the black-handed cloth
Freeing our enslaved bodies of white wisdom
Dimming to blue and darker shades of internal bleeding

Yet as the skin of our country’s opening skin brushes softly with unlearned pain
Against a sky smoothed
Against a cloudless horizon

The eastern shoal lights
In the thunderous prison of ancestral blood
Separating from a songster’s realisy

In the intense unknown / within our belittled homeless youth / shrugging off unchallenged weight in gold / from our Mexican friends / who stare afraid into an unwelcoming mist / to enshroud the religious / fixed on gun-strapped, policed firemen / who from an ugly American hate save us from the guilty lash / boiling in the powerless aftermath of our emotional Greco-Roman rubble / cross-bred with medieval Asian and European plant and animal fibers / dreaming up beauty in the complimentary fold / with airy locks peeled over the dead / sick earth swells with an overwhelming decay of restraint from life / into a confident foray with spirit’s unidentified heights or doorways into the New World / cornered, lightless

The Modern War Machine and his Italian Wife

What billions were thrilled by the fueled insanity?
Behind what masculine thought dreamed our nation’s infancy?

A law for the ancient mind of cultural struggles
To be heard through fallen webs of prehistory

Erected above the books and pleasure-peaked Goddess of man
Who assailed Her tribes with red nations

Breathing in the sand of tirade with negligent life
Over the brink of a cheap & unpaid professor

Claiming to break the mold
With word thievery and undreamt savagery

In bold across the feathered pages of the united Indian
And their matrimonial hold around the balls of Western society,

Exclaiming mad fruition to the hypocritical birth of an unmanned land
Espied with greased wheels enough to vex the modern war machine and his Italian wife

The atheistic unction
To devise life from the commercial brand of one European lie

Tricked into wishing away another generation and their seventh heaven
Alone in Dante’s paradise

A swarm of births
Blooming out from the Buffalo’s hide

Sweating with glorious function
In the prayer-filled world, smoking

To cry with whispering untold highs
Inside the chest of an Egyptian

Denouncing their prince from the dry sarcasm of a hashish tempting
Sharing in the avian nudge

Through ocean’s violent air
Ever-remaining an unchanging force

In the repeated wick
As it blows through a dust-spilled cavern

In the earth’s hidden sky of traveled time
And her rested eye

American; Columbian Men and Women at the Edge of Civilization and Meaning

American, Columbian man
And women
And all between the formed Earth of one awe in God,

“American body,
May you be cooled,
May the dog days of the final moon in your Roman clock tick no more,
May your fires be dampened in the Fall,
May your body always be replenished,”

“This is a prayer from your navel,
Your own son,”

“To the placenta guardian
Standing naked on your African sister’s shore
With crystalline mind
And bearing a wild power at heart
To desist all suffering in the subsistence war on your open-ended land,”

“May your waste touch the ground and seed our forthcoming generations,

May your remains in life bring the mortality of Spring around to a recollected season of renewed glory from the center of your minutest, most peculiar being,

May you bask in endless sunlight until the end of all ages births a newfound ring in the broken upheaval of Earth from your well-fed chest of enlightened air,

May your classical vibrations transition with tradition’s sacred mold in the weary blistering façade of an edgy mirror on which to gaze, reflecting on the welfare of your unborn children,

Americans,

May you re-imagine the Columbian war with un-followed eyes,

May you move in secret with Arab tongues into an interdependent universe of compassion and recognition of the human disease in all its greatness,

May you reason between fingers and over delicate palms the ransom of a foreign woman’s dramatic responsibility, in the troubled sunken rest of your enlightened freedom,

May your prisons of shame open wide to reveal health and the play of a cultural fruition, a boom in the renaissance of oceanic love between all,

May your universe end in the silent need to walk in the tempest of your Earth’s beauty and be swallowed by her drunken New England sea foam teeming at the edge of civilization and meaning
